The Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) recently issued a batch of 500 Notices of Inspection (NOIs) to employers of all sizes in every state across the country. Combined with the 500 already sent out in February, that makes this ICE’s largest I-9 inspection action since November 2009, when it issued 1,000 NOIs amid publicity. (If this is the first you have heard of the recent mass NOI effort, it may be because this batch was notably NOT accompanied by publicity efforts from ICE). For all of 2012, it is expected that ICE will perform over 3,000 I-9 audits.
